Storing your motorhome through the winter months

Storing your motorhome

To safeguard your motorhome's habitation area during winter storage, follow these steps:

  • Clean and Declutter:

Thoroughly clean the interior, removing any perishable items. Empty and clean the fridge, cabinets, and storage areas, prop open fridge and freezer door

  • Moisture Control:
Place moisture absorbers inside to prevent dampness and mold growth. Consider using dehumidifiers if possible.
  • Ventilation:

Crack open windows slightly to allow for airflow, reducing condensation buildup, if it is safe to do so and make certain that pull down beds are lowered slightly from the ceiling and all cupboard are left slightly open.

  • Cushion Protection:
Place cushions in an upright position to maintain their shape and prevent flattening.
  • Interior Covering:
Use breathable covers or cloths to shield furniture and surfaces from dust.
  • Pest Prevention:
Seal any openings that pests could enter through, such as vents or gaps, to avoid unwelcome visitors
  • Battery Care:
Disconnect or use a trickle charger to maintain the battery's health.
  • Fluid Maintenance:
Top up fuel and consider using a fuel stabilizer. Add antifreeze to the plumbing systems to prevent freezing. (Heating only - not drinking water systems)
  • Secure Location:
Store in a secure, dry, and well-ventilated area, away from direct sunlight and harsh weather.
  • Regular Check-ins:
Visit periodically to check for any issues and ensure the motorhome remains in good condition.

Putting your motorhome into winter storage

  • Clean the Interior and Exterior:
    • Thoroughly clean the interior, including countertops, floors, appliances, and cabinets.
    • Wash and wax the exterior to protect the paint and finish.
  • Inspect and Repair:
    • Check for any leaks, cracks, or damage on the roof, windows, and seams.
    • Inspect the tires for wear and tear; consider covering them to prevent sun damage.
    • Address any necessary repairs before storage.
  • Empty and Clean Tanks:
    • Drain and flush the freshwater, gray water, and black water tanks.
    • Clean the tanks and use an Motorhome-specific tank cleaner to prevent odors and buildup.
  • Winterize the Plumbing System:
    • Use an Motorhome antifreeze to prevent freezing in the water lines and drains.
    • Open all taps including hot and cold, until antifreeze flows through.
    • Flush toilets and pour antifreeze into the toilet bowls and tanks.
    • Add antifreeze to any external showers or taps. (Only Use ones designed for fresh water tanks)
    • Always empty the fresh, grey and black water tanks
  • Protect the Engine and Fuel System:
    • Top up the fuel tank to reduce condensation and add a fuel stabilizer.
    • Change the oil and oil filter if it's close to an oil change interval.
    • Consider removing the battery and storing it in a cool, dry place.
  • Manage the Interior:
    • Remove all perishable foods and items that could attract pests.
    • Prop open refrigerator and freezer doors to prevent mold and mildew growth.
    • Leave cupboard doors open to promote ventilation.
  • Manage Moisture:
    • Use moisture-absorbing products to prevent condensation inside the motorhome.
    • Place a dehumidifier inside if possible, or leave containers of desiccant.
  • Cover Windows and Vents:
    • Close and secure all windows, blinds, and curtains to keep sunlight out.
    • Consider using reflective window covers to help regulate temperature
  • Check Propane System:
    • Turn off the propane supply at the tank and ensure all appliances are off.
    • Store propane tanks in a safe, well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight.
  • Secure Against Pests:
    • Seal any gaps or openings where pests could enter, such as vents and access points.
    • Place pest repellents or traps strategically inside the motorhome.
  • Cover or Store Indoors:
    • If possible, store your motorhome indoors to protect it from the elements.
    • If indoor storage isn't available, invest in a quality Motorhome cover that fits properly to avoid movement in the wind which is breathable.
    • As well as keeping the elements and bird droppings at bay, it will also provide some protection from falling leaves and branches as well as keeping the upholstery from fading in direct sunlight.
    • Ideally, upholstery and other soft furnishings should be removed and stored indoors where possible.
  • Document and Disconnect:
    • Take photos of the interior and exterior as documentation before storage.
    • Disconnect the motorhome from power to avoid electrical issues.
  • Secure the Exterior:
    • Lock all doors and windows securely.
    • Put wheel chocks in place to prevent accidental movement.
  • Tyres:
    • If you can use tyre stands and check your tyres regularly to make sure they stay inflated.
    • Flat tyres can be irreparably damaged by being left flat with the weight of a motorhome pressed down on them for extended periods.
  • Regular Check-Ups:
    • Visit your stored motorhome periodically to check for any issues or concerns.
    • Remove accumulated snow if stored outdoors to prevent excess weight.

By following this comprehensive checklist, you can ensure your motorhome is properly prepared for winter storage and will be ready for your adventures when the warmer months return.

Please be aware that specific anti-freezing agents are available for fresh water storage tanks. Using regular anti-freeze could result in lasting harm to your fresh water tanks and potentially pose a risk to users.
